Commercial whaling belongs in the past

Hi Manfred,

Commercial whaling belongs in the past, which is why the Government of Japan's decision to start killing whales for profit in its waters is not only out of step with the rest of the world - it's a step backwards. We need to get them to rethink this terrible decision.

For over 30 years there has been a global moratorium on commercial whaling. Despite this, the centuries of harm whaling has caused and the impact it has had on both our climate and the health of our oceans, the Government of Japan plans to resume whaling in 1.7 million square miles of ocean.

We can't keep quiet as they turn their waters into hunting grounds for these majestic creatures.

Manfred, will you tell the Government of Japan that they have to act now and end commercial whaling for good?

Whales are faced with so many new threats. The last thing they need is for the Government of Japan to turn its back on the world and restart commercial whaling in its waters.

Climate change is depriving whales of food and living space, seismic blasting from the oil industry causes them huge noise disturbances and pollution from single-use plastics has made its way into our oceans and into their stomachs.

By turning their backs on the moratorium, the Government of Japan will not only undo decades of global solidarity, it will also send a message to the rest of the world: that commercial whaling has a place in 2019.

Let's show them it doesn't.

Manfred, will you tell the Government of Japan to rethink this terrible decision and end commercial whaling for good?

In the 1970s we shone a light on this industry, we campaigned for change and won. Over half a century later we are just as committed to making sure that the world stands united against commercial whaling.

Thanks for all you do,

Nick Monro aka Dikson
