Manfred --
The NordStream2 pipeline is being built under
the sea to transport natural gas from Russia into Europe through the Baltic Sea.
This threatens to have devastating consequences for Europe. It
would worsen the impact of climate change,
undercut European cohesion and solidarity and increase Russian leverage
vis-à-vis Ukraine and the EU. This pipeline would be funding Putin's
regime for decades and in particular, facilitate his provocative
pursuit of influence over Eastern Europe.
By supporting the Nord Stream2 project, Germany
is reneging on its solidarity with its European neighbours. This is not
what Europe needs. We must stop it. What Europe needs is a more
integrated gas market. EU institutions should make energy-based decisions more
transparent and more EU-wide.
But now we have a chance to turn things around.
The good news is that on Tuesday, 13 November Germany’s Chancellor, Angela
Merkel, will be attending a meeting in Strasbourg Parliament. This provides us
with a unique opportunity to put pressure on her. Luckily, we are not
alone in this battle: many other European countries are standing against this
project. Already 69 members of the European Parliament from
five different political groups and 22 EU countries plus several dozen national
parliamentarians have come together and signed an open letter to Angela
Merkel.
We need to support the Parliamentarian
call and let the Chancellor know that thousands of other European citizens are
calling on her to stop the pipeline. The more of us who do this, the
more likely she is to listen to us.
Nord Stream2 is an offshore natural gas pipeline
running from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in Germany and is managed by Nord
Stream AG. The project consists of two parallel lines and is the world's longest
submarine pipeline. This project has been described as the pipeline that is
likely to "divide the European Union", leading to new controversies within the
EU countries, and fuelling the opposition between West and East. We
must not allow the rift between the EU Member States to deepen at a time when
the European Union needs cohesion more than ever.
Let's get the German Government to change its
decision in supporting this dangerous project that could have a devastating
impact on our climate change, our economy and our lives.
Thank you for your great support
