Hello Manfred,
We would easily agree that at the age of 40, the best years of any chess
player would be coming to an end. But, as usually happens, the reality proves us
wrong.
Alexey Suetin was another chess player born out of the incredibly prolific
Soviet Chess School. Brilliant as a child; during his youth he got irregular
results, so other names resonated more. For that reason, chess wasn't his main
occupation. Suetin was a Mechanical Engineer.
After his GM title in 1965, at the age of 39, he decided to quit his career
as a Mechanical Engineer and dedicate his years to playing chess professionally.
He went on to create an outstanding career for a chess player of his age
Suetin served as a second and trainer to Tigran Petrosian for many of his
most important matches, including his World Championship victory in 1963. He
was, for many years Moscow's senior coach, overseeing the development of
promising new talents, including Vassily Ivanchuk and Andrei Sokolov.
Suetin also authored many chess books including: “Modern Chess Opening
Theory”, “Three Steps To Chess Mastery” and “Plan Like A Grandmaster”, among
many others.
In his book, “The Chess Player's Laboratory”, when discussing his methods of
training combinatory vision, Suetin recommended the study of chess compositions
as one of the most important exercises a chess player could do in his path of
mastering the art of calculating variations and improving his chess.
As GM Susan Polgar said; "The really good players keep a balance between
mastering their understanding of positional chess while continually staying
sharp tactically and precise in calculation."
365Chess.com has the biggest database of chess compositions online where you
can train, exercise, develop and master your own calculation skills.
As Suetin showed us, it's never too late to become a great chess player.
Practice makes perfect.
