Hi Manfred,
This week we handed in over 355,655 names (including
yours!) to the UK government, urging them to stand up for the Antarctic.
Antarctic Ambassador Gillian Anderson, along with some incredible
volunteers, visited the Foreign Office to talk face-to-face with the government
about the upcoming Antarctic Ocean Commission meeting, where the decision will
be made about whether or not to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.
On
the way, Gillian reflected on all the amazing things we've achieved together in
the last 12 months (spoiler alert: it's a lot). Check out Gillian
Anderson's journey to deliver your name!
If you don't want to watch on Facebook, you
can view the video on YouTube here.
No matter if you
joined us 12 months or 12 hours ago, it's incredible to think about all the
things we've achieved together. Here are just some of the things we've been able
to do:
- By taking action, Greenpeace supporters helped bring the campaign to life -
thousands of you took to the streets and helped make news across the nation.
- Together we called on Boots and Holland & Barrett to ditch krill oil
fished from sensitive Antarctic waters. Not only did UK stores stop sourcing
krill from areas that need protection, the krill industry is changing - thanks
to you!
- Thousands of people contacted almost every MP in the country to make sure
they spoke out about protecting the Antarctic. The UK government, who weren't
being vocal about the Antarctic, are now strongly supporting our call for an
Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.
Around the world, over 2 million people
have added their name to protect the Antarctic. And just like in the UK, these
signatures will be delivered to governments, calling on them to do the right
thing.
The Antarctic Ocean Commission meeting will begin on the 22nd of October. The
outcome could still go either way so it's vital that we continue to call on
decision-makers to be bold in the negotiations to protect this vital ecosystem -
stay tuned for more ways you can help keep up the pressure.
Thanks for
believing in your power to make a difference.

Antarctic team Greenpeace UK
Keep Greenpeace
independent, Manfred
We don't accept any money from
companies or governments so we can be independent and challenge anyone who
threatens the planet or peace. To help us keep fighting climate change,
defending our oceans and protecting ancient forests, you can become a regular
supporter by direct debit.
