When we leave the EU we’ll no longer have access to the institutions that have held our government to account on things like water quality, reducing plastic pollution, wildlife and the air we breathe. The government’s recent proposal just isn’t strong enough to fill that gap.

Hi Manfred,

You and 105,622 other people around the UK signed a petition this summer that made a big difference. Thanks to your pressure, a key bit of the government’s Brexit legislation now commits to the environmental watchdog we asked for - but it’s nowhere near as strong as it needs to be.

When we leave the EU we’ll no longer have access to the institutions that have held our government to account on things like water quality, reducing plastic pollution, wildlife and the air we breathe. The government’s recent proposal just isn’t strong enough to fill that gap.

Luckily for us, they’re asking what you think of their plans so far. They’ve just opened a consultation that anyone can respond to, and they have to listen. It’s our time to shine.

Back in January, Prime Minister Theresa May promised a “world-leading watchdog” to help protect the environment after Brexit. But the latest proposals still don’t live up to this promise.

It’s unclear if the watchdog the government proposed will have legal powers, and we don’t know if it will even be fully independent from the government. If it isn’t, in the future it could be like the government marking their own homework when it comes to the environment. We’ve drafted a response to the government’s consultation which you can send in your name. It’s just two clicks to submit the response. If lots of you take part, there could be historic results.

It’s not just the watchdog: this consultation marks an opportunity to insist that the Environment Act - the new piece of law the government is proposing to raise standards after we leave the EU - guarantees improvements in wildlife, water, waste, and the air we breathe. This is our opportunity to create better environmental standards in the UK than ever before.

Let’s be clear, the government won’t be expecting many responses to their consultation. But they’ve asked for feedback, so that’s what we’ll give them. Let’s show them how much we care.

Thanks and good luck. :)
