Right now, the government are playing politics with our environment.

Hi Manfred,

Six months ago, Environment Secretary Michael Gove promised a "Green Brexit" and a "world-leading" body to hold the powerful to account on the environment. But the government's real proposal has finally been released and our post-Brexit deal for the environment is looking anything but green...

They proposed a watchdog that would be responsible for maintaining environmental standards - but crucially it would have no proper power to hold government bodies or corporations to account when they break the law.

The government's proposal is out for consultation now, and this issue will be debated in Parliament in the coming weeks. That means this is our chance to change their plans. Will you add your name?

At the moment EU institutions enforce rules about air quality, climate change, energy use, water pollution, chemicals and wildlife. The EU might not have been perfect on the environment, but in the past, it’s wielded real power to make the UK clean up its act.

The EU was responsible for transforming Britain’s filthy beaches of the '80s into the seaside resorts we know and love, [1] saved British species with its directives, [2] and now, it’s taking the UK to task on our terrible record on air pollution. [3]

The fact is, this kind of change is often only possible when potential wrongdoers feel the full weight of the law to make them clean up their act. Otherwise, our laws are worthless. We need a watchdog that can champion the environment with real force, and protect it for decades to come.

Right now, the government are playing politics with our environment. They’re making up their own rules, and giving themselves, companies and others who could damage the environment a free pass for the future. But our environment is too important for short term politics.

Dirty beaches, worse air quality, and more risks to endangered wildlife - this is the reality we could be facing if there is no independent body with the right powers to enforce the law.

Thanks so much for your help,

P.S. I know it’s easy to switch off from Brexit talk, but now is a crucial time for us to engage. If you want to understand the situation better, or help with explaining it to a friend, this blog post might help.
