Letter to Rob Collins, Waitrose Managing Director

Hi Manfred,
Thanks for emailing Waitrose. The more of us who get in touch, the stronger the message will be – Waitrose need to take John West’s unsustainable tuna off their shelves.
Can you forward the email below to your friends and ask them to join the campaign? Or you can send them this link:

With thanks,

Hi there,
Last week Tesco said they’ll stop selling John West tuna unless they clean up their act – now it’s time for Waitrose to step up and take John West’s dirty tuna off their shelves.
Despite coming top of our 2015 Sustainable Tuna League Table with their own-brand products, Waitrose continue to sell John West tuna, which is caught using unsustainable fishing methods such as Fish Aggregation Devices. These devices cause huge amounts of by-catch, including sharks and turtles, that is thrown back into the water, dead or dying.
Please help us to send a strong message to Waitrose and John West – people don’t want to see dirty tuna on their shelves.

Thank you

Subject Waitrose: Stop selling John West's dirty tuna
Message Waitrose prides itself on being a sustainable supermarket and in 2015 you were ranked first in Greenpeace’s tuna league table. I am writing now to ask that Waitrose take responsibility for the sustainability of all tuna tins on your shelves - not just your own brand.

Why is Waitrose selling John West tuna?

You know that John West have broken their commitment to clean up their supply chain. Despite this, you continue to stock their unsustainable tuna, caught using large nets associated with Fish Aggregating Devices, a method that causes indiscriminate harm to marine life, and notably to endangered species such as sharks and turtles.

For a long time, Waitrose has been leading the way toward a sustainable tuna market in the UK. Last week, Tesco said they could drop John West if they didn’t reach high sustainability standards and renounce this destructive fishing method. I would expect nothing less from Waitrose.

I sincerely hope you will take action to ensure Waitrose is selling 100% sustainable tuna.

Regards,
